On this women’s day, I had the opportunity to address the young employees of a technology-based start-up BeGig. As the name suggests the organisations promote the gig economy by providing a marketplace for freelancers and organisations looking to hire experts on an hourly basis.
The 90-minute session was attended by over 25 employees of all genders. In fact, I encourage the participation of men as well through these sessions as conversations around menstruation shouldn’t be had in silos. It is imperative that we create spaces where open and uninhibited discussions can thrive around the natural process of menstruation. This will not only help exchange fact-based information but also bust myths and superstitions that get reinforced in the absence of these open conversations.
The day also saw BeGig announce its menstrual leave policy. One of the few companies today that recognise the need for rest through the natural process and help formalise the same through their HR policy. They further laid down guidelines on how to approach in case the employee felt hesitant about going to a male boss regards the same.
